Cuprocking: A Graffiti Revolution 21st Aug 2008

Cuprocking is the brainchild of Andy Uprock. It involves a chain fence, plastic cups, some spray cans and an eye for geometric patterns. Andy calls it a graffiti revolution and he is taking it on a Global Tour.

The reality is that traditional graffiti is now part and parcel of the urban landscape (when was the last time you stopped to look at a piece of street art). But when you see a piece of Andy’s art in situ, you stop, you study and you smile.

When I saw a piece of Cuprocking for the first time, my reaction was...what is that, who did it and why? My guess is that everyone else is just as intrigued. It begs people to want to know more and find out who is behind it; the world tour allows people from all over the globe to express the same inquisitive feelings.

However, this entry isn’t about the art, it’s about the sponsorship. Vice Magazine have acted as the platform and more importantly Australian streetwear label Mooks have hooked up to sponsor Andy on his Global Cuprocking Tour

For me, the overlay of Mooks as an official partner is just genius. It’s the embodiment of cool. Mooks are running with it by including a Cuprocking clip on entry to their main site and of course a longitudinal piece in Vice. The holy grail will be 3rd party media coverage and the art in itself in certainly worthy.

Cuprocking is definitely in the running for my youth campaign of the year. Who would think that in our new-bright online world that cup street art would be in that position.
